"Computer Artifacts" - D2CA's 8" Floppy Disk Collections

Have you ever seen an 8'' floppy disk?

Dan's 20th Century Abandonware's 8" Floppy Disk Sleeve Collection

You may have seen 5¼" floppy disks, like the one shown in the photo above (688 ATTACK SUB™), but have you ever seen an eight-inch floppy disk? I included a 5¼" floppy in the photo above because 8" floppies look similar to 5¼".

5¼" floppy disks were invented in 1976. When personal computers were being developed in the late 1970's, the 5¼" minifloppy disk was selected as the standard disk size and used for Apple, Commodore, CP/M, IBM PC/compatible and other systems. There were a few systems, such as the 1979 Radio Shack TRS-80 II, which had internal 8" floppy drives.

8" floppy disks were created in the early 1970's and the first commercial 8" floppy drives were read-only. 8" read/write drives were introduced in 1973. 8" floppy disks were used primarily in businesses and organizations from the 1970's up to the early 1990's. 5¼" and 8" floppy disks are still being sold today (though not at D2CA)!

Shown below is my extremely limited collection of 8" floppy disk sleeves with a 5¼" floppy sleeve (right) as comparison.

Generic 8" Floppy Disk Sleeve

This is the 8" floppy disk protection sleeve that houses my extremely rare 8" floppy disk of Microsoft FORTRAN-80 Release 3.44 for CP/M 80. Photos of that rare 1981 software title and its equally rare binder manual can be viewed in the Computer Artifacts Rare Software Titles section of D2CA.

8" Floppy Disk Boxes

Graphic Arts 8" Floppy Disk Box (1987)

In relatively good condition for its age, this 10-count box of Graphic Arts 8" floppy disks contains 11 disks total. There are two seperate styles of labels so it's assumed that these disks are the contents of at least two different boxes.

This box of 8" floppy disks was acquired at a yard sale in May 2008!

Shugart 8" Floppy Disk Box

Suffering some outer cover damage from being wrapped in fiber tape, this box houses seven of its original ten 8" floppy disks. Sadly, only two of the disks had their protective paper sleeves (shown above). The gray floppy sleeve must have been from an older release of Shugart's media.
