Dan's 20th Century Abandonware -- A Reference Site?
Once in a while I take a look around the Internet to see if this website of mine is being mentioned. What I have found has amazed me and given me comfort that all this effort has not been in vain. I have chronicled some of these mentions and references to Dan's 20th Century Abandonware. Some are so old they refer to outdated locations this site resided at years ago. 2002: ![]() Thanks, Owen! 2003: ![]() You can still view the entire article at: PC World link 1 or PC World link 2 Thanks, Steve! 2005: ![]() I was not contacted prior to, or after, this publication went to print to either request or to be notified my website content was going to be used as a "reference." My site content being used as a reference for this publication is in no way an endorsement for this publication. This publication can be downloaded (PDF) at: http://pub.turre.com/openbook_valimaki.pdf I also keep a PDF copy on file if this link is unavailable or if you wish to obtain a copy from D2CA. The title page states: "... (3) you may not alter, transform, or build upon this work." Strange ... they built upon my work.... 2006: ![]() A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, "Microsoft: A Decade of Change" was a course teaching for a University of Washington Management of Information Organizations class in March 2006. The print at the bottom of the slides reads, "IMT580A: Management of Information Organizations." This presentation can be found at: http://courses.washington.edu/msim580a/assignments/MSFT_Change.ppt. I also keep a copy on file if this link is unavailable or you wish to obtain a copy from D2CA. This presentation refers to Microsoft products such as Microsoft Bob and Microsoft Office. I am pleased to mention that my site's exhibit about Microsoft Bob is their primary reference! Even over people from Stanford! Thank you! The Mothership Posts News Article Written by Dan About D2CA May 19, 2006 The Mothership, a site with a lot of Apple memorabilia, posted a news article I wrote telling about Dan's 20th Century Abandonware. You can view this article on The Mothership's News Page, or you can download the PDF (526K) I made of this article. Thank you, Mothership! The Register Features Link To D2CA's Microsoft® Bob™ Exhibit In Microsoft-Related Article July 28, 2006 UK-based website The Register featured an article titled "Ballmer to Wall St: we always back a winner" in which Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer, at Microsoft's financial analysts' summit, was quoted as saying, "There are very few areas where, except for Microsoft Bob, we haven't succeeded..." Microsoft Bob is a product rarely mentioned by Microsoft Corporation -- so much so that there is almost no mention of it on Microsoft's website. Visit Microsoft's website and search for "Microsoft Bob" (with the quotes) and see what the results are. In the quote above in The Register's article, they link to Dan's 20th Century Abandonware's Microsoft Bob Exhibit on the words "Microsoft Bob" as a reference to this product. They link to my site's exhibit because Microsoft does not provide any reference of any detail on their own website. It is interesting to note that people from Microsoft Corporation also followed this link to my Microsoft Bob Exhibit. Thank you, The Register! 2007: ![]() July 31, 2007 Computerworld.com published this article about the upcoming release of Microsoft Works 9.0. External links in the article text are in bold blue. The link at the bottom of this image ("released for DOS") linked to D2CA's DOS Legacy Software Catalog which lists the copyright dates of each legacy software title in my collection. Out of all the Internet sites around the world, including Microsoft's website, Computerworld chose instead to link to Dan's 20th Century Abandonware for this reference. Thank you, Computerworld! 2008: ![]() October 2, 2008 Low End Mac featured Dan's 20th Century Abandonware in their "Around the Web" section on their home page and in their News section. A different site is featured every four days for various Mac-related categories. D2CA was featured under "software." D2CA not only "claims to be a legal source of abandoned commercial and shareware apps" -- it is! Thank you, Low End Mac! ![]() October 5, 2008 Applelinks published a very nice review of Dan's 20th Century Abandonware. D2CA was also featured on Applelinks' home page as the fourth review from the top out of 12 reviews for October 5, 2008! Thank you, Applelinks! |
