Commodore 128

Operating System
The Commodore 128 was CBM's first home computer system with the capability of running a true operating system (GEOS notwithstanding). The Commodore 128 is capable of running a ported version of CP/M, developed by Digital Research Inc.

Digital Research Inc. developed a version of CP/M to run on the Commodore 128 computer system. A command-prompt-based operating system, CP/M can run command-line programs, format CP/M floppy disks, display directory listings, "type" the contents of files on-screen, set the system date, dump file contents in hexidecimal format, and more.

CP/M looks like another disk operating system developed after CP/M, having the same drive letter and carrot command prompt, 8.3 file format, compiled COM executable files, date, DIR, format, rename, type and other commands, SYS system files, etc. What was the name of this disk operating system?

This version was released on one 165K floppy (2 disk sides total).

KAYPRO II

Operating System
The KAYPRO II was one of the first transportable "luggable" computers capable of running CP/M. Freed from the desktop, the transportable computer made mobile computing possible from the early 1980's on.

Nearly impossible to find today on its original media, this version of CP/M is made specifically for KAYPRO II transportable "luggable" computers. KAYPRO II computers have no hard drive so the operating system has to be run from a bootable disk in the A: drive. Some of the CP/M commands in this version include COPY which copies the entire A: disk to the B: drive and can verify the target disk, FORMAT which erases the disk in the B: drive and can verify the disk, DDT which dumps disk sector data in hex on the screen, STAT which gives the current drive's disk read/write status and free disk space, CONFIG which changes disk options for the B: drive, TERM which is a "dumb terminal" emulator that sends and receives data through the computer's serial port, BAUD which sets the baud rate for the serial port, PIP, ED, MOVCPM, SYSGEN, LOAD, ASM, DUMP, SUBMIT, OVERLAYB, FAC, XSUB and more.

It also includes the S-BASIC Compiler version 5.4b.

This version was released on one 191K floppy.

OSBORNE

Operating System
The Osborne transportable was another "luggable" computer which runs the CP/M operating system. Also developed in the early 1980's, the Osborne transportables competed with other computers such as the KAYPRO.

A very rare find these days, this version of CP/M must be run from a bootable disk in the Osborne OCC 1's A: drive. This release of CP/M includes an on-line help file with a summary of the CP/M commands, XDIR, XSUB, MOVECPM, AUTOST, LOAD, STAT, PIP, ED, COPY, DUMP, DDT, SYSGEN and more.

This version was released on two 185K floppies.

Another rare find, this version of CP/M must be run from a bootable disk in the Osborne Executive's A: drive. This release of CP/M includes CP/M RMAC Assembler 1.1, CP/M Macro Assembler 2.0, SHOW displays read/write status and free disk space (KB), COPYSYS, DIR, DATE, ERASE, INITDIR, RENAME, SHOW, TYPE, HEXCON, GENCON, XREF, PIP, ED, GET, PUT, LIB, SID, DEVICE, DUMP, LINK, SAVE, SUBMIT, SET, SETUP, SETDEF, CHARGEN, and more.

This version was released on three 185K floppies.
