CAD
If it can be drawn on paper, it can also be drawn on a computer screen -- and then printed on paper...or saved as a data file. With the advent of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software in the mid-1980's, drafters began trading in their T-squares for PCs. CAD software allowed drawings to be stored electronically on floppy disks or hard drives. No longer were drafters forced to store their creations in filing cabinets and drawing tubes. And instead of packing bulky tubes with huge plotter sheets of paper, drawings could be transported from one location to another on floppy disks or via modem. One great advantage of electronic drafting was that drawings could be printed again, and again, and again. No need for a copier or print service. Drawings could also be edited on-screen. No smudges on a drawing sheet. The "electronic revolution" of the 1980's changed much of the business world -- from pencil, paper, and calculator to screen, keyboard, and mouse. It began to change the personal world as well. |

Card-Sign-Banner-Etc.
In the mid-1980's software companies began making programs that could print cards, signs, banners, letterheads, calendars, and later, even newsletters. It made the personal computer more "personal," and although targeted mainly at the home computer user, schools and businesses found use for this software as well. People could now print cards saying exactly what they wanted to. They could print signs for garage sales and other things with professional-looking lettering and pictures. Big long or tall banners could be printed for birthday parties or other occasions. Calendars could be printed for personal schedules from card/sign/banner software with calendar features. Schools could print signs for upcoming events to post at the school and send home to parents. Banners could be printed for displaying the "ABC's," highlighting class topics, and for topics that could be displayed in main school areas. Calendars could be printed for everything from assignment deadlines to event schedules for students and parents, etc. Letterheads could be printed for official school business. Cards could be printed for student and parent event invitations. This software could even create certificates for awards and achievements. Businesses also saw advantages for this software. For a fraction of the cost of a printing service they could print professional letterheads complete with pictures. And if the software had a graphics editor, they could even add their logo. Calendars could be printed for weekly, monthly, and yearly event scheduling. Signs announcing anything from the annual company banquet to the winner of the football pool look more presentable than handwritten ones. Cards could be printed for invitations to the annual Christmas party or golf scramble. OK, so not every application may have been 100% business-oriented but it made life a little more fun. |

Fashion. It's been all the rage since Adam and Eve donned the first fig leaves. Since cavemen and cavewomen donned the first animal skins. Once fibers and dyes were discovered to weave the first non-nature-based clothing, fashion was born. From monks cloaks to attire for the elite, fashion in one form or another dominates civilization around the world. As for me, I'll stay "forever in blue jeans...." |

Communication -- Remote Access
If your computer is not part of a local or wide area network, the only way to access a computer remotely is to use a remote access communications program. This software makes a one-to-one modem or direct cable connection to allow a user to operate a computer from a remote location. This is useful when a user needs to retrieve information from a computer when they are away from that machine. In the 1980's and early 1990's, several DOS-based programs were created to meet this remote access need. |

Communication -- Terminal
In the 1980's and early 1990's, before the Internet came to the public, Bulletin Board Services (BBSs) were created for people to go on-line to exchange information, files, conversation, and entertainment. But if the BBS's were outside the local calling area, long-distance charges applied in addition to any service/membership fees. This could get costly in a very short time. Communication software allowed people to connect to BBS's, other on-line services, and even directly to another computer. |
|
Perfect Link 1.00 Copyright © 1983 Perfect Software, Inc. This communications program is a very rare find these days.In the earliest days of PC communications there was no e-mail, no messenger service, and no options like later BBS's would have. It was soley for sending and receiving data files. This program doesn't even have a phone dialer -- the telephone connection must be established before using the program. Perfect Link has features that would not be surpassed in communication programs made years later -- session logging, baud rates up to 9600, terminal emulation, programmable function/ctrl/alt keys, on-screen session time length, print and delete options, on-line help and more. This version was released on one 320K floppy.   Total install size: 34K |

Crosstalk XVI is a communication program that was designed to connect you to the more commercial BBS's common in the 1980's -- Dow Jones, Compuserve, Delphi, etc. It handles all communication parameters and saves your account information. But one very unprofessional aspect of Crosstalk is if you press F1 for help, instead of getting on-line help you get the message, "WHAT DO YOU WANT DIRT BAG?" in the status bar at the bottom of the screen (note the screen shot). Very helpful. Thank you so much. This version was released on one 360K floppy. Total install size: 295K |

Database
"Information is power." In the early 1980's computer-based database development software created the ability to make electronic database file management systems which could store vast amounts of information in a relatively compact manner. No longer did companies have to write or type volumes of print-based data. No longer was it necessary to store tons of paper-based information in warehouses. Thousands, and even millions, of pages worth of information could now be stored on the hard drive of a single computer. Database development software made finding specific information infinitely faster than searching through printed material. With a few keystrokes, depending on the size of the database, information could be displayed on a computer monitor in seconds. Electronic database software can also sort database information as many ways as there are fields in their database records. And making backup copies of electronic databases is as easy as copying files to storage media. Are you still handwriting backup copies of documents the way the Scribes did centuries ago? It's time to put away the quill feather pen and retire the dipping ink bottle. The "electronic revolution" is here! |

Database Accessory
Did you ever purchase a database development software package, only to find it didn't have all the functionality you needed? It couldn't generate a user menu interface. It couldn't create custom reports. There wasn't enough statistical capability. If a company commits heavily to a database development system, it becomes very costly to scrap it for a different one. Enter database development "add-on" software. That extra functionality that doesn't break a company's budget and allows them to meet their users' needs and save face with upper management. From the mid-1980's to the early 1990's, there were several third-party software companies that developed DOS database add-on products for several database formats: Alpha Four, dBASE, FoxBASE, Paradox, Professional File, Q&A, Reflex, etc. And some companies that developed database software sometimes intentionally held back key features to be sold separately as add-ons to generate additional revenue. |

Desktop Publishing
DOS desktop publishing software was popular from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's. A combination of word processing and graphics tools, desktop publishing software is used to make newsletters, fliers, presentations, and illustrated publications. Desktop publishing software distinguished itself from other software of the time with horizontal and vertical ruler bars. As this feature became popular, other software added this feature to their interfaces. By the mid-1990's most Windows 3.1x word processor software had nearly as many features as desktop publishing software -- sizable fonts, columns, etc. (graphics insertion and text wrap had been features of some DOS word processors since the late 1980's). If you owned a Windows 3.1x word processor you didn't really need a desktop publishing program unless you specifically needed the features they had that word processors did not. From the mid-1990's on, most desktop publishing software faded into history or adapted to compete with other software. |

E-mail -- Network
In the early 1990's, before, and after, the Internet came to the general public, corporate employees exchanged e-mail through their local and wide-area networks and some set up dial-in Bulletin Board Services (BBSs). Network-based e-mail allows corporate employees to contact each other to exchange business data. It can be in the form of text data and/or files attached to messages. Instead of having to handwrite or typewrite paper-based letters, memos, etc. and send them via corporate or postal mail -- which could take minutes or days depending on the recipient's location -- messages could be transmitted electronically and arrive in seconds, saving valuable time and money. |

Educational
Since the early 1980's, educational computer software has redefined how children and people of all ages can learn knowledge. Computers can not only crunch numbers for businesses, they can also help teach children and adults knowledge. Educational software can teach any aspect of knowledge -- reading, math, science, languages, etc. Many educational software programs, especially those for children, take on the form of a game and blend the teaching and knowledge into the game. As the game is played, the knowledge is taught. Learning knowledge on a computer also adds an additional benefit -- basic computer skills. In order to run the educational program, you need to know how to operate the computer. And if you have trouble with that there's computer training software as well. |

Mr. Ranger asks which park you want to go to. You enter the park's number that matches the other Ranger's hint. You fly over the countryside, looking for clearings that Boo Boo might be in. Sometimes, the clearing you land in will not be the one Boo Boo is at. You will find a deer or other animal and then have to move on. The right software can process a single ledger entry across many different facets of the accounting process with the press of a button. And it can calculate in seconds -- 100% error-free every time -- what would take staffers days and even weeks the "old-fashioned" way. From the mid-1980's to the early 1990's DOS accounting software systems were created capable of managing accounting needs from the home financier to corporate business and all point |
