Integrated Suite
GeoWorks is an advanced PC-based version of the GEOS graphical user interface. It is both a graphical environment for running graphical, mouse-driven applications and an integrated suite of application software programs. Had GeoWorks gained more acceptance from the computer industry and software vendors, it might have given Microsoft's Windows 3.x a run for its money. GeoWorks' graphical mode uses less resources than Windows 3.1, has modes for novice, intermediate, and advanced users, and cost less. Unfortunately, GeoWorks did not have the clout with the application software vendors Microsoft did, and faded into obscurity in the early 1990's. |

Copyright © 1991 GeoWorks When starting GeoWorks Pro, a menu offers three user levels; Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced. You can also "shell" to DOS. Featuring icon, filename, or detail view and directory navigation in each window, directory tree window for directory and file management, a graphical toolbar giving access to floppy/hard/ CD-ROM drives, switch between maximized/overlapping windows, and a "trash can" for deleted files. Application software includes Scrapbook, GeoBanner, GeoComm, GeoPlanner PIM, GeoDex Rolodex-like program, GeoDraw, Solitaire, Tetris, "Bounce" and more. An included America Online client accesses what was a BBS at the time! New features in GeoWorks Pro are Quattro Pro Special Edition 1.0 support, font management, performance monitoring, and screen "dumping." Because it is so similar to older GeoWorks Ensemble 1.0, Ensemble 1.0's print manual is distributed with GeoWorks Pro 1.2. GeoWorks Pro 1.2 only runs by default on 486 and earlier processors with DOS 5.0 and earlier. It can be made to run on DOS 6.xx by using DOS SETVER. This version was released on six 720K floppies. Total install size: 9.57MB |

Copyright © 1993 GeoWorks A major upgrade of the GEOS GUI, new features include DOS 6.xx support, "launchers," similar to Windows 3.x PIF files, redesigned icons, and more. But the most notable improvements were the new application programs. Improved GeoWrite and GeoDraw, new spreadsheet, database, and planner programs nearly qualified this GUI as an "office suite." New GeoWrite features include search and replace, thesaurus, mail merge, undo, up to 32 columns, style sheets, graphics layer, and much more. New GeoDraw features include DTP-like rulers, snap-to grid, rotate, flip, skew, nudge, gradients, and much more. The new GeoCalc spreadsheet program features 99 functions, formula builder, 8,192 rows and 256 columns, 7 chart types, and much more. The new GeoFile database program features a graphical form designer, 8,192 records file limit, calculated fields, multiple layouts, expression builder, search, sort, custom tab order support, and much more. GeoWorks Ensemble 2.0 only runs on 486 and earlier processors. This version was released on five 1.2MB floppies.   Total install size: ~10MB |

NewDeal Office Release 3.1b Copyright © 1999 NewDeal, Inc. What's this? A "new deal" by Microsoft? No, this newer release of NewDeal Office offers an alternative graphical user interface in addition to the standard GeoWorks GUI -- one very similar to Microsoft's Windows 95/98 "shell," complete with a gray "start" bar with clock and "Express" button which opens a menu that is identical in look and navigation to Windows 95/98's Start Menu. It also has 24 background images, including the one shown in the screen shot that smacks in the face of Microsoft's Windows 95/98 startup logos. This GUI even duplicates the Windows 9x window minimize, maximize, and close buttons and window title style. NewDeal Office Release 3 is the GEOS operating system with the GeoWorks graphical user interface, incorporating updated and new application software within it. Applications include NewWrite, NewCalc, NewFile, NewDraw, NewComm, NewDex, NewPlanner, NewManager, NewBanker, Text File Editor, Media Viewer, Calculator, File Finder, FaxReceive, FaxView, Directory Lister, Book Reader, CD Player, Scrapbook, Clock, Stopwatch, Screen Dumper, Solitaire, Crossword, and Skipper SE Web browser by Breadbox Software Company LLC. Other features include preference settings, printer control panel, World (continuing the GeoWorks tradition of displaying all programs in a single window), Launch (NewDeal version of Windows 9x's "run"), Computer (NewDeal version of Windows 9x's "My Computer"), Wastebasket (NewDeal version of Windows 9x's "Recycle Bin"), 13 screen savers, 202 clipart images, 36 document templates, on-line help and much more. All of this functionality -- and it can still run on a 386 PC running DOS 5.0 or greater. This title originally retailed for US$69.95. Breadbox Software Company LLC, creators of the Skipper SE Web browser used in NewDeal Office Release 3, would acquire full rights to both the GEOS operating system from GeoWorks and NewDeal Office from NewDeal in 2001. Breadbox Software Company LLC would expand the use of the GEOS operating system to be used in PDA's and PDN's and other handheld devices while continuing development of what they would call the Breadbox Ensemble, returning to a similar title that GeoWorks used in past versions. This version was released on eight 1.44MB floppies and one CD-ROM disc. Total install size: 16.20MB |
