Screen Shot Gallery -- Macintosh®

CAD
If it can be drawn on paper it can also be drawn on a computer screen -- then printed on paper or saved as a data file, etc. With the advent of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software in the early 1980's, drafters started trading in their T-squares for computers.
CAD software allowed drawings to be stored electronically on floppy disks or hard drives. No longer were drafters forced to store paper drawings in filing cabinets and cardboard tubes. Instead of packing bulky tubes with huge plotter sheets of paper, drawings could be transported from one location to another on floppy disks or via modem. Another advantage of electronic drafting was that drawings could be printed again, and again, and again. No need for expensive drafting copiers or print services. Drawings could also be edited on-screen. No smudges on a drawing sheet.
The "electronic revolution" changed the drafting world from pencil, paper, and T-square to screen, keyboard, and mouse.

Card-Sign-Banner-Etc.
In the mid-1980's software companies began making programs that could print cards, signs, banners, letterheads, calendars, certificates, and later, even newsletters. It made the computing more "personal" and although targeted mainly at the home computer user, schools and businesses found use for this software as well.
People could now print cards saying exactly what they wanted to. They could print signs for garage sales and other things with professional-looking lettering and pictures. Long or tall banners could be printed for birthday parties or other occasions. Calendars could be printed for personal schedules.
Schools could print signs for upcoming events to post at the school and send home to parents. Banners could be printed displaying the "ABC's," highlighting class topics, and for topics that could be displayed in main school areas. Calendars could be printed for everything from assignment deadlines to event schedules for students and parents, etc. Letterheads could be printed for official school business. Cards could be printed for student and parent event invitations. This software could even create certificates for awards and achievements.
Businesses also saw advantages for this software. For a fraction of the cost of a printing service they could print professional letterheads complete with pictures -- and if the software had a graphics editor they could even add custom logos. Calendars could be printed for weekly, monthly, and yearly event scheduling. Signs announcing anything from the annual company banquet to the winner of the football pool looked far better than handwritten ones. Cards could be printed for invitations to the annual Christmas party or golf scramble. OK, so not every application may have been 100% business-oriented but it made life a little more fun.

The Print Shop Ensemble The Print Shop Ensemble
Copyright © 1997 Br0derbund Software, Inc.

This "ensemble" by Br0derbund is for all practical purposes a re-release of older versions of The Print Shop, The Print Shop Companion, and the graphics collections that go with them. The 1.1.3 version of The Print Shop has the same graphical interface Br0derbund's DOS version had 3 years earlier. The "splash screen" of this version of The Print Shop Companion has a 1994 copyright date. So, if you used a DOS or Windows 3.1 version of these programs earlier, you'd be right at home with this one. Between these two programs, you can design and print cards, signs, banners, calendars, letterheads, post cards, business cards, certificates and envelopes. This 2-CD collection also includes a 1991 version of TeachText, a 1994 version of The Print Shop Exporter for converting graphics, 152 graphics libraries, 40 Print Shop Companion "ready made" templates, and on-line help. Macintosh users who thought they were buying a "new" version of The Print Shop would be in for a big disappointment. And while Br0derbund released this collection on two CDs, the total volume used on both disks was just over 370MB, which is just over half the volume of a single CD-ROM disc.

This version was released on two CD-ROM discs.   Total install size: 68.10MB

Database
"Information is power." Database software created the ability to store vast amounts of information in a relatively compact manner -- electronically. No longer did companies have to write or type volumes of print-based data. No longer was it necessary to store tons of paper-based information in warehouses. Thousands, and even millions, of pages of information could now be stored on a hard drive in a single computer.
Database software made finding specific information infinitely faster than searching through printed material. With a few keystrokes, depending on the size of the database, information could be displayed electronically in seconds. Database software can also sort database information as many ways as there are fields in their database records.
Making backup copies of electronic databases is as easy as copying files to backup media. Can you make a backup copy of your telephone book that easy? Imagine photocopying every page or writing down every entry.

HyperStudio f3.0.71s HyperStudio f3.0.71s
Copyright © 1996 Roger Wagner Publishing, Inc.

HyperStudio is HyperCard taken to the next level -- multimedia. HyperStudio was a push by Roger Wagner Publishing, Inc. to make word processor software obsolete and replace it with multimedia-centric software, such as HyperStudio. HyperStudio adds multimedia extensions to the HyperCard "stack" database, such as embedding QuickTime "movies," background graphics, music, color images, and more, making stacks as visual and interactive as Internet websites. HyperStudio's MediaLink converts stacks to HTML and can publish them on the Internet. HyperLogo can create sliding controls, enlarge/shrink images, drag and snap objects, place objects where the mouse is clicked, play sounds when objects are clicked, display date/time, create alert dialogs, manage files, etc. This is done by creating New Button Actions, or NBAs. Routines are assigned to buttons and executed when clicked. Custom routines written in Think C v6 or higher can be incorporated into HyperStudio stacks. Other items include Box Maker, Menu Tamer, StoryBoard, Title Card, HideShow and RollCredits NBAs, drawing/sound/text/button tools, color/ texture toolbar, clipart on the CD and much more.

This version was released on CD-ROM.   Total install size: 16.20MB

Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing software was very popular from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's. A combination of word processing and graphics tools, DTP software is used mainly for making newsletters, fliers, presentations, and other publications.
Desktop publishing programs distinguished themselves from most other software of the day with horizontal and vertical ruler bars. As this feature became more popular, software companies began adding this feature to other software products.
By the mid-1990's most word processor software had nearly as many features as desktop publishing programs -- sizable fonts, columns, etc. (graphics insertion and text wrap had been features of some word processors since the mid-1980's). If you owned a word processor program after the mid-1990's, you probably didn't need a desktop publishing program unless you needed specific features unique to DTP software. It was at this time most desktop publishing programs faded into history or changed to compete with other feature-rich software.

Educational
Computers can not only crunch numbers for businesses, they can also help teach children and adults knowledge. Educational software can teach any aspect of knowledge -- reading, math, science, languages, etc.
Many educational software programs, especially those for children, take on the form of a game and blend the teaching into the game. As the game is played, the knowledge is taught.
Learning knowledge on a computer also adds an additional benefit -- basic computer skills. In order to run the educational program, the user needs to know how to operate the computer.

Number Munchers 1.0 Number Munchers 1.0
Copyright © 1990 MECC

A Pac-Man-like game which teaches number multiples, equality, and inequality. Number Muncher traverses a 6x5 grid of 30 math equations, some of which are multiples of the number, equal the number, or are inequal to the number for the level. As you move Number Muncher to each equation, monsters come in to the grid from either the top, bottom, left or right side and move across the grid and off the other end. One or two "safe zones" pop up now and then for a short time to let you escape the monsters. Like Pac-Man, after completing every third level an "animated interlude" is played showing Number Muncher triumphing over one of the monsters. As the game progresses, more monsters come into the grid and move faster to increase the game's difficulty. The levels go through the numbers 1-10 then start over but with ever-increasing difficulty. The game also has a "high score" board which you can put your name on if you qualify.

This version was released on one 800K floppy.

Super Munchers 1.0 Super Munchers 1.0
Copyright © 1991 MECC

Following the gameplay of Number Munchers, Super Munchers helps develop recognition, categorizing, vocabulary, knowledge in music, popular culture, science and social studies. This Muncher also moves about a 30-square grid but munches words instead of numbers for items such as cars or other topics. New features includes a Super Muncher transformation cell after 20 correct answers in a row. Super Munchers can destroy the monsters. A power gauge shows Super Muncher's strength. As long as correct answers are achieved at a fast pace, Super Muncher keeps his power. If the power runs out, Super Muncher reverts back to a Muncher. It has "safe zones" and "time out" (pause). Answer Vision, a new feature, pauses the game and blanks incorrect answers if you have a Super Muncher and select Answer Vision from the Game menu. It shows the answers, but also drains Super Muncher's power. Super Munchers also shows "animated interludes" after completing every third level and has Beginner/Advanced/Genius difficulty levels.

Electronic Document
The "paperless office" -- that was what electronic document imaging software promised. No more hard copies. No filing cabinets full of paper documents. No papers getting lost or discarded. All information would pass from one computer to another and the documents would be "filed" electronically on servers, hard drives, or other electronic storage. Welcome to the wave of the future.
At least, that was the way it was supposed to work...
If anything, in many cases, the more businesses tried to reduce paperwork, more often than not they tended to generate even more than before the reduction measures were implemented. Copier and computer printer manufacturers don't have to worry about going out of business anytime soon.

Financial -- Accounting & Payroll
Debits, credits, checks, and balances. Revenues, deficits, interest, and taxes. Reconciliation, expenditures, budgets, and statements. If it can be done with pencil, calculator, and ledger book it can also be done with keyboard, monitor, computer, and software. Accounting and payroll software let one person do what up to dozens of financial staffers did by hand. The right software can process a single ledger entry across many different facets of the accounting process with the press of a button. And it can calculate in seconds, 100% error-free every time, what would take staffers days and even weeks the "old-fashioned" way.
Since the early 1990's, accounting software systems have been capable of managing accounting needs from the home financier to corporate businesses and all points in between. So say goodbye to your CPA and hello to MCA (Macintosh Computerized Accounting).

Financial Manager
Before computers were affordable enough for home users, the average person had to keep track of their finances the "old-fashioned" way with pencil and paper. Even in the late-1980's Macintosh computers still cost thousands of U.S. dollars and were too expensive for most home users. But for those who could afford to buy a computer there was a "modern" alternative to the calculator -- financial manager software.
A financial manager program consolidates your personal financial records into a single program. Early financial manager programs could manage and reconcile your checkbook, manage accounts, track expenses, show your current financial status, and print financial reports. Later versions added extra features such as charts, more detailed reporting, tax-related processing, stock management, and access to on-line financial services, including on-line banking. Most financial manager programs offer some way to back up your personal information.
Are you still tracking your personal finances the same way people did in the third century B.C.? If so, it's time to throw away your abacus, hand-crank calculator, feather pen and ink well, columnar books, financial notepads, and all but one or two of those No. 2 pencils. The "electronic revolution" has arrived!

Financial -- Tax Preparation
"That's one for you, nineteen for me." "Death and taxes." The two constants of life. Mankind has paid taxes for millennia in nearly every area of the world. In the USA there are taxes for myriad things -- income tax, sales tax, federal tax, state tax, city and local taxes, property tax, electric tax, fuel tax, FICA and Medicare tax, "sin" tax (alcohol and tobacco), telecom excise taxes, tax - tax - tax and more tax. If they could tax the air we breathe they would do that, too (give them time...).
OK, so you really don't have to pay taxes if you don't want to. Just don't buy anything and don't work for any legitimate employer. Don't file tax forms, don't have a social security number, and live outside the encompassing shadow of the U.S. IRS. You can "Daniel Boone" it in the wild and live off the land -- so long as you don't get caught by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
For those of us who do pay taxes, tax preparation software was created to help guide us through mind-numbing tax forms and make the process almost as easy as filling in the blanks. It even does the math for you. Most tax preparation programs have forms, schedules, and worksheets for the tax filing process.
No more trips to the post office or library to get a copy of those schedules and forms you need to tell Uncle IRS how much you owe. No longer do you have to depend on expensive CPAs or tax preparation companies to fill out your tax documents. For a much smaller cost a tax prep program can assemble the necessary docs and even send them electronically to the Tax Man.

Graphics Software
Computers are wondrous machines. They can process data at mind-numbing speeds. Computers translate data as binary 0's and 1's and arrange those digits in combinations to represent letters and numeric values, words and calculations. This is all very good and efficient but it isn't very fun is it?
In the early 1980's, "draw," "paint" and other graphics programs were invented. Suddenly, anyone with a computer and one of these programs could create graphics pictures to use for anything their imaginations could conceive. This added a little humanity to the emotionless, number-crunching machines. Soon after these graphics programs became popular many software developers found they either had to incorporate graphics in their programs to remain competitive.
Graphics changed computing forever. There are serious graphics-based programs such as presentation and CAD software. But graphics finally allowed computers to do the one thing that previously was impossible with just words and numbers -- play graphics-based games. Yes, now that US$4,300.00 Macintosh computer the company bought in 1986 could process data from games at the same blinding speeds it could crunch the corporate balance sheet.

Integrated Suite
"Integrated" word processor/spreadsheet/database/communication suites were popular from the mid-1980's to early 1990's. Predecessors to full-scale "office" suites, they provided less expensive multi-application functionality instead of having to purchase individual full-version programs.
At a time when full-featured word processor, spreadsheet, and database software cost US$495.00 each for a single-user license, sacrificing a few features and using an integrated suite saved the buyer hundreds, and sometimes literally thousands, of U.S. dollars. In many cases those extra features weren't needed anyway.

Legal
Can you afford attorney fees? Then you certainly can afford the cost of a PC and legal document software. With a legal document program you can create certifiably legal documents complete with all the legal jargon for wills, power of attorney, employment agreements, trust forms, bankruptcy, bail, insurance claims, legal guardian, guarantees, bill of sale and on and on.
A notary public is far less costly. Save your lawyer for the "big" issues -- print the legal paperwork yourself!

Operating System
Apple developed the Macintosh operating system with a mouse-driven, windowed, graphical user interface with pull-down menus and long filename capability years ahead of other software companies.
In 1985, Microsoft copied the graphical look and feel of the Macintosh operating system and created a graphical user interface that loaded and ran on top of their text-based Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS). Microsoft named their graphical environment "Windows."
Apple sued Microsoft for copyright infringement but was unable to get Windows pulled off the market.

Office Suite
From the mid-1980's to the early 1990's, the closest anyone came to making "office" suites for the Mac were integrated word processor/spreadsheet/database/communication/etc. suites. ClarisWorks was the most popular Macintosh integrated suite.
In the mid-1990's, Microsoft introduced the full-feature productivity office suite to the Macintosh culture.

Presentation
Business companies continually strive for that extra "edge" to sell their products. With the advent of Apple Macintosh computers, this new technology, combined with presentation software, began replacing film, overhead and slide projectors in the early 1980's.
The first presentation software programs were little more than "slide show" creators displaying slides with text, numbers and graphs. But as time went on, presentation software began to combine features of graphics "draw" programs and desktop publishing software.
By the early 1990's presentation software could make presentations complete with rendered graphics, slide transition effects, import data from word processor, spreadsheet, database, and other software, create 2D and 3D graphs, interact directly with items on the slides, and combine animation and sound -- voice, sound effects and music -- for a multimedia experience.
While film, slide, and overhead projectors were becoming "obsolete" because of computers and presentation software, the concept of the projector itself was not. Rather, it adapted and soon there was a new kind of projector -- one that projected the computer's video display.

Programming
It is one thing to run someone else's software. But there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of seeing a computer run a program you have made. Programming languages allow you to do just that -- by combining the proper combination of syntax and logic. Some programming languages only "interpret" program source code and do not allow you to compile the code into an executable program. More advanced programming languages have compilers and advanced programming features.
