Screen Shot Gallery -- Windows® 1.x, 2.x, 3.x Shareware

During the "golden age" of PC computing from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's, if you were searching for an inexpensive shareware program you had two choices -- you could visit your favorite computer software store and browse racks of shareware programs on 5¼" floppy disks, or, from the comfort of your own computer, download a Windows 1.x, 2.x, or 3.x shareware program from your favorite bulletin board service (BBS).
The shareware "try before you buy" concept offers users free trials of software. Most commercial software companies will not let you return products once their shrinkwrapped packages have been opened.
After finding the shareware program that best meets your needs, to both obtain the full-featured program free of "nag" screens and to support the authors who offer these low-cost software alternatives, it is only right to "register" the program by paying the author's registration fee. Shareware programs can cost tens or even hundreds of times less than comparable commercial software.

Audio
In the early 1990's, MOD and MIDI were the two dominant audio file formats distributed on Bulletin Board Services. WAV audio files were also popular but its file format created is much larger than MODs or MIDIs.
Audio was a category of computer software left largely untouched by commercial companies. It was up to innovative shareware authors to provide Windows 3.x MOD and MIDI players for the masses.

This is a midi sequencer that is fully functional, meaning you can save the midi files you create. It has tempo settings, a keyboard window you can play from either your computer keyboard or by clicking the "keys" with the mouse, accepts input from a synthesizer keyboard, has a window for configuring multiple instruments/tracks/ channels -- and you can name each track, measure and beat settings, stop/record/ rewind/and play buttons on the toolbar, and on-line help. The registration fee was US$29.95.

CAD
Throughout the 1990's, AutoCAD was the dominant Windows 3.x commercial Computer Aided Design (CAD) program. It also cost US$3,400. The average business, much less the typical home user, often was not in a position to afford the cost of high-end commercial software. Shareware Windows 3.x CAD software offered a far less expensive alternative.

Communication
Before the Internet came to the public, Bulletin Board Services, or BBSs, were created for people to go on-line to exchange information, files, conversation, and entertainment.
But if the BBSs were outside the local calling area you also paid long-distance charges in addition to any service/membership fees. This could get costly in a very short time.
Communication software allowed people to connect to BBSs, other on-line services, and even one-to-one with another computer.

A terminal communications program, UNICOM has many features found in similar commercial software of the day. They include 16-color DEC VT102 (ANSI), DEC VT52, ANSI-BBS, TTY emulation, X-Y-ZModem , Ymodem Batch, Ymodem-G, ZModem Resume, Kermit, CompuServe B, QuickB and ASCII protocols, modem display lights, 1,500-line scrollback buffer, WinScript script language, recorder, and scheduler, download file processor, DDE support, host mode, batch dialing, phone directory, 256-color GIF viewer, on-line help and more.

Desktop Publishing
In the early 1990's, Aldus Pagemaker was one of the dominant Windows 3.x commercial desktop publishing programs. It also cost US$495.00. Diagramming
Look! On your computer screen. It's a CAD. It's a DTP. No, it's a diagramming program!
With the drawing and layering tools of CAD programs, plus the scale ruler interface look of a DTP program, diagramming software was designed for making flowcharts, heiarchial charts, network diagrams, etc.
Diagramming software combines the power of CAD and DTP software yet simplifies the process to make creating charts and diagrams almost as easy as using a word processor. With a diagramming program you can be productive without having to spend a lot of time and money learning complex CAD concepts that, in many diagramming and charting cases, would never be used.
So the next time you need a flowchart to write that computer program or a diagram of your company's network to trace a wiring connection, don't turn to your engineering drafter to make it on their CAD program -- do it yourself with a diagramming program.

Electronic Document
The "paperless office" -- that was what electronic document imaging software promised. No more hard copies. No filing cabinets full of paper documents. No papers getting lost or discarded. All information would pass from one computer to another and the documents would be "filed" electronically on servers, hard drives, or other electronic storage. Welcome to the wave of the future.
At least, that was the way it was supposed to work...
If anything, in many cases, the more businesses tried to reduce paperwork, more often than not they tended to generate even more than before the reduction measures were implemented. Copier and computer printer manufacturers don't have to worry about going out of business anytime soon.

Copyright © 1994 Adobe Systems, Inc.

An early Windows 3.x version, Acrobat Reader was distributed free with software and available for free download from BBS's in the early 1990's and later the Internet.

Adobe's PDF format became a document file standard the same way zip files did for archiving. Able to incorporate multi-font multi-pitch text, graphics, hyperlinks, WYSIWYG, and standard page size formatting, the PDF file format is well suited for documentation purposes.

Acrobat Reader can only read PDF files. It can't save or create new ones. Adobe offers the reader free to entice users to buy the full version of Acrobat that can make PDF files. Acrobat Reader is still offered free today.

This version was released as a self-installing EXE file.

The average computer user often was not in a position to afford the cost of high-end commercial software. Shareware Windows 3.x graphics software offered a less expensive alternative.

Screen Saver
Screen savers were originally designed to prevent screen "burn-in" -- the result of the same or similar displays "burning" their image into the inner phosphorous lining of a CRT monitor. A CRT monitor can be ruined in 72 hours with an idle screen displayed continually. This is why you will find used CRT monitors with patterns of spreadsheets and other programs "burned" into their picture tubes.
This can also happen to "new" monitors.
While the best screen saver is one that "blanks" the screen, it is not as entertaining as one that displays something while at the same time "saving" the screen from damage. It also does not earn as much money. Hence, a market was created filled with screen savers flashing displays and some also adding sound to make them a multimedia experience.
But if a screen saver has to hold your attention is it still a screen saver or has it become an entertainment program?

Chickens From Hell! Chickens From Hell!
Copyright © 1994 Diversified Computer Services

The chickens have revolted and Old McDonald is in trouble now! This Windows 3.x screen saver begins by having eggs "splatter" against your screen -- all over the screen. They will cover your screen if you let this screen saver run long enough. Also, every now and then, some animations will play out on top of the splattered eggs. A chicken will run out onto the screen and make an obnoxious face and sound at you. A cow will pop up in the middle of the screen and a chicken will fly over and drop an egg on its head. A T-Rex will pop its head up and roar at you in the lower right of the screen -- then a chicken will pop out of the left side of the screen and hit T-Rex in the head with an egg. If you like eggs, cows, T-Rex, and, yes, chickens, you will find this screen saver entertaining. It has settings for how fast the eggs splatter and how fast the animations appear and password protection. The registration fee was US$10.00.

Another screen saver by Diversified Computer Services, these folks must have liked the farm life. You know, cows, chickens, the mooing and the clucking and the cock-a-doodle-doo....

This screen saver is not anything like the "Little House on the Prarie" scene. Rather, it shows scenes of smart aleck cartoon cows and victimized chickens flying across the screen. One scene is a cow on it's back grinning and chuckling. Another is a cow giving you the "raspberry." A third is a cow mooing and a fourth shows a chicken floating onto the screen tethered by a balloon. The balloon pops and the distraught chicken drops off the screen. It has settings for the speed of the animations, the option to blank the screen for the animations and password protection. The registration fee was US$10.00.
