Audio     In the early 1990's, when sound cards became available for PCs, audio software was distributed both with sound cards and also for PCs with sound cards to both create and edit audio files. Most were generally limited to WAV and MIDI formats and had limited capabilities beyond recording and saving audio files. Windows 3.x also included Sound Recorder -- a program to record WAV files. At the time, most of the sophisticated audio software was reserved for recording studios and major commercial applications far beyond the affordability of the average home PC user.     By the mid-1990's, software developers began offering programs with the features users were demanding. Audio recording and editing software began emerging to let home PC users do things once reserved for commercial businesses. PC-based audio programs were developed with features once found only in recording studios. While still expensive -- usually in the hundreds of U.S. dollars -- now the home PC user could finally have true audio composing capability.

Sound Forge XP for Windows 3.0d Copyright © 1995 Sonic Foundry, Inc. A rare find today, this is a Windows 3.1x version of Sound Forge and has nothing whatsoever to do with that Microsoft operating system that would be released six years later. CAD     If it can be drawn on paper it can also be drawn on a computer screen -- and then printed on paper (or saved as a data file, etc.). With the advent of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, drafters began trading in their T-squares for PCs. CAD software allowed drawings to be stored electronically on floppy disks or hard drives.     No longer were drafters forced to store their creations in filing cabinets and drawing tubes. And instead of packing bulky tubes with huge plotter sheets of paper, drawings could be transported from one location to another on floppy disks or via modem. One advantage of electronic drafting was that drawings could be printed again, and again, and again. No need for a copier or print service. Drawings could also be edited on-screen. No smudges on a drawing sheet.     The "electronic revolution" changed much of the business world -- from pencil, paper, and T-square to screen, keyboard, and mouse. It changed the personal world as well.

AutoCAD LT Copyright © 1993 Autodesk, Inc. For those who couldn't afford the US$3,400 full version of AutoCAD, Autodesk offered a less-featured "lite" release. Expert Home Design 1.1 Copyright © 1993 Expert Software, Inc. Expert Home Design is a CAD-like program for planning home design layouts. It has a floating toolbar window, and a floating window for X-Y coordinates. Expert Landscape 1.0 Copyright © 1993 Expert Software, Inc. A CAD-like program to plan landscaping projects, it features several "materials libraries" of trees, shrubs, flowers, etc. (even automobiles), text and drawing tools, drawing scaling, top and side views, color and pattern fill, metric and english measurement, area measuring, align to grid, rotate, flip, item group/ungroup, send to front/back, drawing lock/unlock, on-line help, and more. DeltaCad 3.1 Copyright © 1998 Midnight Software, Inc. The same year that Windows 98 was released, Midnight Software, Inc. released this 16-bit CAD program to run on either Windows 3.1x or Windows 95. Features include a tabbed toolbar with Select, Edit, View, Point, Line, Circle, Shapes, Text, and Dimension tools, status bar with X-Y coordinates input and display, changable viewing scale display, buttons to set up to 5 file bookmarks, snap to midpoint, toggle midpoint, mouse-over tooltips for toolbar and status bar, 256 layers, snap-to grid, 10 symbol libraries with over 450 symbols, zoom in/out, set drawing data, extract group data to bill of materials, print preview, on-line help and more. Midnight Software, Inc. included an autorun.inf file on the CD-ROM disc so the setup program would automatically start if put in a CD-ROM drive running Windows 95. Card-Sign-Banner-Etc.     Windows 3.x versions of card, sign, banner, etc. software became more robust than their DOS predecessors. In the early 1990's, when CD-ROM technology became more common, software companies were able to distribute their software on CDs.     With 650MB per CD they were able to include items not distributable on floppies. It was easy to distribute hundreds, or even thousands, of graphics pictures, fonts, sound files, etc. This enhanced the software and gave the consumer better products.     This was also the time that color inkjet printers were working their way down from big corporations to the home computer user. Sharp color printing was now a must, not an option. The "jaggies" that older card/sign/banner/etc. software produced were no longer accepted.     People could now print color cards that looked almost as good as the high-priced ones in retail stores. Color signs gave much more impact than black-and-white ones. And color banners made any occasion that much brighter.     Now the average home computer user could produce items that previously were possible only from a printing service. It would only get better as technology continued to advance.

Windows 3.0 Software Announcements for Windows 1.0b Copyright © 1992 Parsons Technology, Inc. This is one of the first versions of Announcements. Print cards, posters and banners. Use the seven PCX graphics libraries included with the software or others. It has color support and special text shaping utilities. The WYSIWYG preview is crudely placed in the main window. Nonetheless, Announcements for Windows is a user-friendly program that can create colorful documents for almost any occasion. This version was released on two 1.2MB floppies. It features graphical toolbars for card occasion categories -- birthdays, holidays, get well, awards etc., dozens of pre-made card templates, clipart and quote viewers, import BMP and WMF graphics, print preview, bring to front, send to back, front, inside, back card views, text left, center, right justification, hundreds of color and monochrome clipart images by C/Maker, 60 TrueType fonts, on-line help and more. Some software vendors released 16-bit and 32-bit versions in one package. This 16-bit version of Printmaster lets you create and print cards, banners, posters, newsletters, brochures, calendars, labels, note cards, business cards, letterheads, envelopes, and fax covers. Communication -- Fax     Before computers became commonplace in businesses, many companies transferred information over phone lines via facsimile, or fax machines. Short bursts of fax data could be sent around the world for minor long-distance charges, and within local calling areas for just the cost of your fax machine's usage.     When computers began to encroach upon the business world, modems, already using telephone lines, gained fax capability as well. Fax software, combined with a computer's modem, could send faxes in the same manner as a facsimile machine.     But the computer had one advantage the fax machine did not -- the ability to save electronic copies of faxes both sent and received in addition to the traditional print hardcopy.     So stop wasting all that money on waxy rolls of fax paper and gritty fax toner. Communication -- Remote Access     If your computer is not part of a local or wide area network, the only way to access a computer remotely is to use a remote access communications program. This software makes a one-to-one modem or direct cable connection to allow a user to operate a computer from a remote location.     This is useful when a user needs to retrieve information from a computer when they are away from that machine.     In the 1980's and early 1990's, several Windows-based programs were created to meet this remote access need.

Windows 3.0 Software Carbon Copy for Windows 1.0b Copyright © 1992 Microcom Systems Carbon Copy is a remote access communication program featuring guest/host modes, phone book, file transfer, automatic callback, data compression, host keyboard/mouse/screen disable, 9600 bps modem support, error correction, restricted access to configuration settings, remote operation of DOS and Windows programs, supports most video modes, and on-line help. It also advertised on its box, "Allow many users to share expensive applications." A suggestion for remote copyright infringment? This version was released on one 1.2MB and one 720K floppy. Database     "Information is power." "Whoever controls information controls the world." Database software created the ability to store vast amounts of information in a relatively compact manner -- electronically. No longer did companies have to write or type volumes of print-based data. No longer was it necessary to store tons of paper-based information in warehouses. It features 10 data field types, up to 20 index keys per database, relational one-to-one, one-to-many linking, database and form editors, advanced report designer with graphics import, dBASE, RapidFile, ASCII import, ASCII and CSV export, field encryption, password protection, navigation toolbar, on-line help and much more. One feature that could potentially cause system degradation is the constant display updating of the system time on the main toolbar which writes the time to the hard drive every second. With OLE supoprt, video, sound, images, and other objects can be incorporated into askSam databases. This version of FoxPro is an interpreter. It will not compile FoxPro applications into standalone programs. FoxPro must be installed on every computer running database applications created with it. Monarch for Windows 1.0 Copyright © 1993 Personics Corporation From the 1960's up to the early 1990's the mainframe ruled the computer data center. This is the first version of Monarch. It is a "data mining" program that reads text- based mainframe-generated print report files and creates custom databases, data tables, and custom reports based on the mainframe print data. Its interface shows data as a virtual "green-bar printout." Monarch turns a print report into a wealth of data which can be manipulated, analyzed and exported to other formats. Database 1.0.0 Copyright © 1998 MySoftware Co. Part of MySoftware Co.'s "ProVenture" software series, this is a re-release of MySoftware Co.'s MyDataBase for Windows. Feature for feature it is identical with Windows 3.1 versions released four years earlier. While the media states it is for "Windows 3.1 and Windows 95" it is a 16-bit program that runs on both platforms. The only difference in this version is that MySoftware Co. added 1,001 clipart images, Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 for Windows 3.1x and Windows 95, and an on-line manual in PDF format and released this version on CD-ROM. Desktop Publishing     Desktop publishing software was popular from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's. A combination of word processing and graphics tools, DTP software is mainly for making eye-catching newsletters, fliers, brochures, etc. Desktop publishing software distinguished itself from other software of the time with horizontal and vertical ruler bars. As this feature became popular, other software companies began adding it to their products.     By the mid-1990's, most Windows 3.1x word processor software had nearly as many features as Desktop publishing software -- sizable fonts, columns, etc. Graphics insertion and text wrap had been features of some DOS word processors since the late 1980's. If you owned a Windows 3.1x word processor you almost didn't need a desktop publishing program unless you needed some of the unique features word processors did not have.     It was at this time most desktop publishing software faded into history or changed to compete with other software.

Diagramming     Look! On your computer screen. It's a CAD. It's a DTP. No, it's a diagramming program!     With the drawing and layering tools of CAD programs, plus the scale ruler interface look of a DTP program, diagramming software was designed for making flowcharts, heiarchial charts, network diagrams, etc.     Diagramming software combines the power of CAD and DTP software yet simplifies the process to make creating charts and diagrams almost as easy as using a word processor. Visio 2.0 Copyright © 1993 Shapeware Corporation Visio is one of the best diagramming programs and one of the easiest to learn. It features an intuitive interface with stencil windows opening on the left of the screen, drawing windows open to the right of stencil windows, and a "smart" toolbar above these windows which changes to match features of objects or text items. The workspace can be customized and saved.
