Audio
In the early 1990's, when sound cards became available for PCs, audio software was distributed both with sound cards and also for PCs with sound cards to both create and edit audio files. Most were generally limited to WAV and MIDI formats and had limited capabilities beyond recording and saving audio files. Windows 3.x also included Sound Recorder -- a program to record WAV files. At the time, most of the sophisticated audio software was reserved for recording studios and major commercial applications far beyond the affordability of the average home PC user. By the mid-1990's, software developers began offering programs with the features users were demanding. Audio recording and editing software began emerging to let home PC users do things once reserved for commercial businesses. PC-based audio programs were developed with features once found only in recording studios. While still expensive -- usually in the hundreds of U.S. dollars -- now the home PC user could finally have true audio composing capability. |

CAD
If it can be drawn on paper it can also be drawn on a computer screen -- and then printed on paper (or saved as a data file, etc.). With the advent of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, drafters began trading in their T-squares for PCs. CAD software allowed drawings to be stored electronically on floppy disks or hard drives. No longer were drafters forced to store their creations in filing cabinets and drawing tubes. And instead of packing bulky tubes with huge plotter sheets of paper, drawings could be transported from one location to another on floppy disks or via modem. One advantage of electronic drafting was that drawings could be printed again, and again, and again. No need for a copier or print service. Drawings could also be edited on-screen. No smudges on a drawing sheet. The "electronic revolution" changed much of the business world -- from pencil, paper, and T-square to screen, keyboard, and mouse. It changed the personal world as well. |

Card-Sign-Banner-Etc.
Windows 3.x versions of card, sign, banner, etc. software became more robust than their DOS predecessors. In the early 1990's, when CD-ROM technology became more common, software companies were able to distribute their software on CDs. With 650MB per CD they were able to include items not distributable on floppies. It was easy to distribute hundreds, or even thousands, of graphics pictures, fonts, sound files, etc. This enhanced the software and gave the consumer better products. This was also the time that color inkjet printers were working their way down from big corporations to the home computer user. Sharp color printing was now a must, not an option. The "jaggies" that older card/sign/banner/etc. software produced were no longer accepted. People could now print color cards that looked almost as good as the high-priced ones in retail stores. Color signs gave much more impact than black-and-white ones. And color banners made any occasion that much brighter. Now the average home computer user could produce items that previously were possible only from a printing service. It would only get better as technology continued to advance. |

Communication -- Fax
Before computers became commonplace in businesses, many companies transferred information over phone lines via facsimile, or fax machines. Short bursts of fax data could be sent around the world for minor long-distance charges, and within local calling areas for just the cost of your fax machine's usage. When computers began to encroach upon the business world, modems, already using telephone lines, gained fax capability as well. Fax software, combined with a computer's modem, could send faxes in the same manner as a facsimile machine. But the computer had one advantage the fax machine did not -- the ability to save electronic copies of faxes both sent and received in addition to the traditional print hardcopy. So stop wasting all that money on waxy rolls of fax paper and gritty fax toner. The "electronic revolution" is here! |

Communication -- Remote Access
If your computer is not part of a local or wide area network, the only way to access a computer remotely is to use a remote access communications program. This software makes a one-to-one modem or direct cable connection to allow a user to operate a computer from a remote location. This is useful when a user needs to retrieve information from a computer when they are away from that machine. In the 1980's and early 1990's, several Windows-based programs were created to meet this remote access need. |
|

Communication -- Terminal
In the 1980's and early 1990's, before the Internet came to the public, Bulletin Board Services (BBSs) were created for people to go on-line to exchange information, files, conversation, and entertainment. But if the BBS's were outside the local calling area, long-distance charges applied in addition to any service/membership fees. This could get costly in a very short time. Communication software allowed people to connect to BBS's, other on-line services, and even directly to another computer. |

"Information is power." "Whoever controls information controls the world." Database software created the ability to store vast amounts of information in a relatively compact manner -- electronically. No longer did companies have to write or type volumes of print-based data. No longer was it necessary to store tons of paper-based information in warehouses. Thousands, and even millions, of pages worth of information could now be stored on a hard drive in a single PC. Database software made finding specific information infinitely faster than searching through printed material. With a few keystrokes, depending on the size of the database, information could be displayed on a monitor in seconds. Electronic database software can also sort database information as many ways as there are fields in their database records. Try changing the order of entries in a telephone book. Making backup copies of electronic databases is as easy as copying files to floppy disks or tape using a backup software program. So burn your paper-based archve data -- the "electronic revolution" is here! |

Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing software was popular from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's. A combination of word processing and graphics tools, DTP software is mainly for making eye-catching newsletters, fliers, brochures, etc. Desktop publishing software distinguished itself from other software of the time with horizontal and vertical ruler bars. As this feature became popular, other software companies began adding it to their products. By the mid-1990's, most Windows 3.1x word processor software had nearly as many features as Desktop publishing software -- sizable fonts, columns, etc. Graphics insertion and text wrap had been features of some DOS word processors since the late 1980's. If you owned a Windows 3.1x word processor you almost didn't need a desktop publishing program unless you needed some of the unique features word processors did not have. It was at this time most desktop publishing software faded into history or changed to compete with other software. |

Diagramming
Look! On your computer screen. It's a CAD. It's a DTP. No, it's a diagramming program! With the drawing and layering tools of CAD programs, plus the scale ruler interface look of a DTP program, diagramming software was designed for making flowcharts, heiarchial charts, network diagrams, etc. Diagramming software combines the power of CAD and DTP software yet simplifies the process to make creating charts and diagrams almost as easy as using a word processor. With a diagramming program you can be productive without having to spend a lot of time and money learning complex CAD concepts that, in many diagramming and charting cases, would never be used. So the next time you need a flowchart to write that computer program or a diagram of your company's network to trace a wiring connection, don't turn to your engineering drafter to make it on their CAD program -- do it yourself on a diagramming program. |

E-mail -- Network
Before, and after, the Internet came to the general public, corporate people exchanged e-mail through their local and wide-area networks. Network-based e-mail allows corporate employees to contact each other to exchange business data. It can be in the form of text data and/or files attached to messages. Instead of having to write or typewrite paper-based letters, memos, etc. and send them via corporate or postal mail -- which could take minutes or days depending on the recipient's location -- messages could be transmitted electronically point-to-point and could arrive in seconds, saving valuable time. So help your local mailroom person and tell your supervisor that they need corporate e-mail. |

Educational
Computers can not only crunch numbers for businesses, they can also help teach children and adults knowledge. Educational software can teach any aspect of knowledge -- reading, math, science, languages, etc. Many educational software programs, especially those for children, take on the form of a game and blend the teaching into the game. As the game is played, the knowledge is taught. Learning knowledge on a computer also adds an additional benefit -- basic computer skills. In order to run the educational program, you need to know how to operate the computer. |

The "paperless office" -- that was what electronic document imaging software promised. No more hard copies. No filing cabinets full of paper documents. No papers getting lost or discarded. All information would pass from one computer to another and the documents would be "filed" electronically on servers, hard drives, or other electronic storage. Welcome to the wave of the future. At least, that was the way it was supposed to work... If anything, in many cases, the more businesses tried to reduce paperwork, more often than not they tended to generate even more than before the reduction measures were implemented. Copier and computer printer manufacturers don't have to worry about going out of business anytime soon. |

Financial -- Accounting & Payroll
Debits, credits, checks, and balances. Revenues, deficits, interest, and taxes. Reconciliation, expenditures, budgets, and statements. If it can be done with pencil, calculator, and ledger book it can also be done with keyboard, monitor, computer, and software. Accounting and payroll software let one person do what up to dozens of financial staffers did by hand. The right software can process a single ledger entry across many different facets of the accounting process with the press of a button. And it can calculate in seconds -- 100% error-free every time -- what would take staffers days and even weeks the "old-fashioned" way. Since the early 1990's, Windows 3.1x accounting software systems have been capable of managing accounting needs from the home financier to corporate businesses and all points in between. Say goodbye to your CPA and hello to PCA (Personal Computer Accounting). |

Financial -- Financial Manager
Before computers were affordable enough for home users the average person had to keep track of their finances the "old-fashioned" way with pencil and paper. Even in the mid-1980's PCs were still too expensive for the average home user. But for the fortunate few who could afford the several thousand US dollars it cost at that time to buy a computer there was a "modern" alternative to the calculator -- financial manager computer software. A financial manager program consolidates your personal financial records into a single program. Early financial manager programs could manage and reconcile your checkbook, manage credit card accounts, track expenses, show your current financial status, and some even offered tax information. Later versions added extra features such as charts, more detailed financial reporting, and access to on-line services including on-line banking. Nearly all financial manager programs offered some way to back up your personal information. Are you still tracking your personal finances the same way people did in the third century B.C.? If so, it's time to throw away your columnar books, financial notepads, and all but one or two of those No. 2 pencils. The "electronic revolution" has arrived! |

Financial -- Financial Planner
Are you rich yet? If not, maybe a financial planner program is what you need to climb the ladder to fame and fortune. Assess your current financial situation, plug that data into a financial planner program, and do what it tells you. By the time you're 65 you're rich! No? You did what it said and you're not rich? What happened? Unfortunately, financial planner software can't guarantee your job, increase your benefits, or keep the financial markets on an ever-rising bull session. Often, your own abilities and common sense will guide you down the road to riches as good or better than someone's computer program. |

Financial -- Tax Preparation
"That's one for you, nineteen for me." "Death and taxes." The two constants of life. Mankind has paid taxes for millennia in nearly every area of the world. In the USA there are taxes for myriad things -- income tax, sales tax, federal tax, state tax, city and local taxes, property tax, electric tax, fuel tax, FICA and Medicare tax, "sin" tax (alcohol and tobacco), telecom excise taxes, tax - tax - tax and more tax. If they could tax the air we breathe they would do that, too (give them time...). OK, so you really don't have to pay taxes if you don't want to. Just don't buy anything and don't work for any legitimate employer. Don't file tax forms, don't have a social security number, and live outside the encompassing shadow of the U.S. IRS. You can "Daniel Boone" it in the wild and live off the land -- so long as you don't get caught by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. For those of us who do pay taxes, tax preparation software was created to help guide us through mind-numbing tax forms and make the process almost as easy as filling in the blanks. It even does the math for you. Most tax preparation programs have forms, schedules, and worksheets for the tax filing process. No more trips to the post office or library to get a copy of those schedules and forms you need to tell Uncle IRS how much you owe. No longer do you have to depend on expensive CPAs or tax preparation companies to fill out your tax documents. For a much smaller cost a tax prep program can assemble the necessary docs and even send them electronically to the Tax Man. |

Fonts & Font Utilities
At first, PCs were only capable of printing a single block-type font in DOS. With the advent of graphics mode, that changed. Along with colorful pictures and animation came different display and type faces dubbed fonts. At first there were only a handful of fonts -- Serif, Courier, Roman, Script, etc. In the mid-1980's, programs such as Printmaster and The Print Shop were among the first to take advantage of fonts. Soon afterward, word processors and spreadsheets running in graphics mode incorporated multiple fonts. Gam |
