Audio
In the early 1990's, when sound cards became available for PCs, audio software was distributed both with sound cards and also for PCs with sound cards to both create and edit audio files. Most were generally limited to WAV and MIDI formats and had limited capabilities beyond recording and saving audio files. Windows 3.x also included Sound Recorder -- a program to record WAV files. At the time, most of the sophisticated audio software was reserved for recording studios and major commercial applications far beyond the affordability of the average home PC user. With the advent of 32-bit Windows 95, software developers began offering programs with the features users were demanding. In the mid-1990's, software began emerging to let home PC users do things once reserved for commercial businesses. PC-based audio programs were developed with features once found only in recording studios. While still quite expensive -- usually in the hundreds of U.S. dollars -- now the home PC user could finally have true audio composing capability. |

CAD
If it can be drawn on paper it can also be drawn on a computer screen -- and then printed on paper, saved as a data file, or even transferred to other locations via modem. With the advent of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, drafters began trading in their T-squares for PCs. CAD software allowed drawings to be stored electronically on floppy disks, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, or hard drives on standalones, networks, or even the Internet. No longer were drafters forced to store their creations in filing cabinets and drawing tubes. And instead of packing bulky tubes with huge sheets of plotter paper, drawings could be transported from one location to another on disks or via modem. One advantage of electronic drafting was drawings could be printed again and again. No need for a copier or print service. Drawings could also be edited on-screen. No smudges on a drawing sheet. The "electronic revolution" changed much of the business world -- from pencil, paper and T-square to screen, keyboard and mouse. It began to change the personal world as well. |

Card-Sign-Banner-Etc.
Windows 95 allowed software developers to create programs to print cards, signs, banners, letterheads, calendars, newsletters and more with new features, high-resolution color graphics, and better quality. It made the Personal Computer all the more "personal," and although targeted mainly at the home computer user, schools, businesses, and others found use for this software as well. People could print cards saying exactly what they wanted to. Signs could be printed for garage sales and other things with professional-looking quality. Long and tall banners could be printed for birthday parties and other occasions. Calendars could be printed for personal schedules. Schools could print signs for upcoming events and send home to parents. Banners could be printed for displaying the "ABC's," highlighting class topics, and for topics that could be displayed in main school areas. Calendars could be printed for everything from assignment deadlines to event schedules for students and parents, etc. Letterheads could be printed for official school business. Cards could be printed for student and parent event invitations. This software could even create certificates for awards and achievements. Businesses also saw advantages for this software. For a fraction of the cost of a printing service they could print professional letterheads complete with pictures -- and if the software had a graphics editor they could even create their logo. Calendars could be printed for weekly, monthly, and yearly event scheduling. Signs announcing anything from the annual company banquet to the winner of the football pool looked far better than handwritten ones. Cards could be printed for invitations to the annual Christmas party or golf scramble. OK, so not every application may be 100% business-oriented but it makes life a little more fun. As technology advances, sometimes a new technology will render other established technologies unusable. With the advances in computer printer technology, more and more PC users began trading in their aging dot-matrix printers for a new kind of printer known as the inkjet. Inkjet printers brought laser-quality printing to the masses for a fraction of the cost of a laser printer. They also brought color printing to the people and eliminated the screeching noise dot-matrix printers are renowned for. But inkjet printers also sent one aspect of card/sign/banner/etc. software into obsolescence -- the ability to make banners. Inkjets were built only to use single-sheet paper and did not have tractor feeders for continuous-form paper. While some inkjet printers allowed continuous-form paper to be fed into them, the high cost and relatively low capacity of ink cartridges made printing banners on inkjet printers impractical and in some cases impossible. |

Communication
In the mid-1990's, as millions of computer users were migrating to Windows 95, they were also migrating from Bulletin Board Services and other "old" on-line services to the global, and largely toll-free, community of the Internet. Almost overnight, BBS's became obsolete. They could not compete with the graphical point-and-click wonder of the World Wide Web. Anyone with a HTML editor and a few megabytes of FTP space could have a website and have the potential to draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors at once for only the cost of an Internet account and with no telephone lines to maintain. BBS's are limited to their number of phone lines and have to pay for these lines. They became a memory were replaced by another form of Internet communication known as Telnet. With the advent of Windows 95, and 32-bit software, for those who still had to communicate the "old fashioned" way, some software companies released 32-bit communication software. Some would adapt later to include Internet compatibility. But it would be only a matter of time before the "comm" program gave way to the Web browser. One aspect of communication that did survive the "Internet revolution" was remote access communication software. For those who have to communicate point-to-point between two computers or remotely connect to a network, remote access was spared the digital chopping block. |

Database
Database software created the ability to store vast amounts of information in a compact manner -- electronically. This eliminated the need to write or type volumes of print-based data. No longer was it necessary to store tons of paper-based information in warehouses. Millions, even billions, of pages of information could be stored on hard drives of PCs or network servers. Finding information is much faster than searching through printed material. With a few keystrokes, depending on the database size, information could be displayed on a monitor in seconds. Database software can also sort database information as many ways as there are fields in their database records. Making backup copies of electronic databases is as easy as copying files to backup media, local and/or remote network servers, etc. Imagine photocopying every page or writing down every entry of your phone book. |

Desktop themes are the 32-bit Windows evolution beyond Windows 3.x screen savers and background images. They add customized animated icons, mouse cursors and sounds for more of a multimedia experience. Themes offer sound schemes that play custom sounds for different Windows events. You can hear sounds every time you navigate the Start menu, open a program, maximize/minimize a window, right-click with your pointing device, etc. Desktop themes are fun for personal entertainment, but could you imagine an office cubicle section with hundreds of computers running dozens of different desktop theme sounds? Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing software was very popular from the mid-1980's to the mid-1990's. A combination of word processing and graphics tools, DTP software is mainly for making newsletters, fliers, presentations, etc. Desktop publishing programs distinguished themselves from most other software with horizontal and vertical ruler bars. As this feature became popular, other software companies began including it in their products. In the mid-1990's most 32-bit Windows 95 word processor software had nearly as many features as DTP programs. If you owned a Windows-based word processor you didn't need a DTP program unless you had a specific need for the features they have that word processors did not. By the time Windows 95 software came to be, most desktop publishing software faded into digital history. |

Diagramming
Look! On your computer screen. It's a CAD. It's a DTP. No, it's a diagramming program! With the drawing and layering tools of CAD programs, and the scale ruler interface look of a desktop publishing program, diagramming software was designed for making flowcharts, heiarchial charts, network diagrams, etc. Diagramming software combines the power of CAD and DTP software yet simplifies the process to make creating charts and diagrams almost as easy as using a word processor. With a diagramming program you can be productive without having to spend a lot of time and money learning complex CAD concepts that, in many diagramming and charting cases, would never be used. So the next time you need a flowchart to write that computer program or a diagram of your company's network to trace a wiring connection, don't turn to your engineering drafter to make it on their CAD program -- do it yourself with a diagramming program. |

E-mail -- Network
In the early 1990's, before, and after, the Internet came to the general public, corporate employees exchanged e-mail through their local and wide-area networks and some set up dial-in Bulletin Board Services (BBSs). Network-based e-mail allows corporate employees to contact each other to exchange business data. It can be in the form of text data and/or files attached to messages. Instead of having to handwrite or typewrite paper-based letters, memos, etc. and send them via corporate or postal mail -- which could take minutes or days depending on the recipient's location -- messages could be transmitted electronically and arrive in seconds, saving valuable time and money. |

Educational
Since the early 1980's, educational computer software has redefined how children and people of all ages can learn knowledge. The graphical interface of 32-bit Windows and advances in computer hardware and software took educational software to a whole new level that can include digital voice, sounds and music, animated and real video, and high-resolution graphics which can make learning a multimedia experience. Computers can not only crunch numbers for businesses, they can also help teach children and adults knowledge. Educational software can teach any aspect of knowledge -- reading, math, science, languages, etc. Many educational software programs, especially those for children, take on the form of a game and blend the teaching and knowledge into the game. As the game is played, the knowledge is taught. Learning knowledge on a computer also adds an additional benefit -- basic computer skills. In order to run the educational program, you need to know how to operate the computer. |

Electronic Document
The "paperless office" -- that was what electronic document imaging software promised. No more hard copies. No filing cabinets full of paper documents. No papers getting lost or discarded. All information would pass from one computer to another and the documents would be "filed" electronically on servers, hard drives, or other electronic storage. Welcome to the wave of the future. At least, that was the way it was supposed to work... If anything, in many cases, the more businesses tried to reduce paperwork, more often than not they tended to generate even more than before the reduction measures were implemented. Copier and computer printer manufacturers don't have to worry about going out of business anytime soon. |

Financial -- Accounting & Payroll
Debits, credits, checks, and balances. Revenues, deficits, interest, and taxes. Reconciliation, expenditures, budgets, and statements. If it can be done with pencil, calculator, and ledger book it can also be done with keyboard, monitor, computer, and software. Accounting and payroll software let one person do what up to dozens of financial staffers did by hand. The right software can process a single ledger entry across many different facets of the accounting process with the press of a button. And it can calculate in seconds -- 100% error-free every time -- what would take staffers days and even weeks the "old-fashioned" way. Since the mid-1990's, Windows 9x accounting software systems have been capable of managing accounting needs from the home financier to corporate businesses and all points in between. Say goodbye to your CPA and hello to PCA (Personal Computer Accounting). |

Financial -- Financial Manager
Before computers were affordable enough for home users the average person had to keep track of their finances the "old-fashioned" way with pencil and paper. Even in the mid-1990's PCs were too expensive for the average home user. But for the fortunate few who could afford a US$3,000+ computer there was a "modern" alternative to the calculator -- financial manager software. A financial manager program consolidates your personal financial records into a single program. Early financial manager programs could manage and reconcile your checkbook, manage credit card accounts, track expenses, show your current financial status, and some even offered tax information. Later versions added extra features such as charts, more detailed financial reporting, and access to on-line services including on-line banking. Nearly all financial manager programs offered some way to back up your personal information. Are you still tracking your personal finances the same way people did in the third century B.C.? If so, it's time to throw away your mallet, chisel, and stone tablet, abacus, columnar books, financial notepads, and all but one or two of those No. 2 pencils. The "electronic revolution" has arrived! |

Font
PCs, at first, were only capable of printing a single block-type font in DOS. With the advent of DOS-based graphics mode, all that changed. Along with colorful pictures and animation came different display and type faces dubbed fonts. DOS-based Windows 3.x, also being 100% graphical, took advantage of typeface fonts and uses both TrueType fonts and Type I fonts. 32-bit Windows 95 continued to use these font types. So why go across town to that printing service to have a "For Sale" sign printed when you can do it yourself with the right computer, software, and printer? Spice up those print jobs with some fancy fonts and they'll look as good as what you could have bought at a printing service. |

Graphics Software
Computers are wonderous machines. They can process data at mind-numbing speeds. Computers translate data as binary 0's and 1's and arrange those digits in combinations to represent letters and numeric values, words and calculations. This is all very good and efficient but it isn't very fun, is it? In the mid 1990's, 32-bit graphics software was developed that allowed anyone with a computer running Windows 95 or Windows NT to create and manipulate graphics images, apply special effects to graphics, and create eye-catching items with both text and graphical attributes. Commercial business print shops had to adapt to stay in the paper printing business once this graphics software hit the mainstream consumer. |

Holiday & Entertainment
Computers can do the workload of thousands of people on a single machine. They can process information billions of times faster than the human brain. But the one thing a computer can't do is feel. It can't be happy. It can't be sad. It can't get angry, and it can't have fun. Humans, on the other hand, do feel. They have emotions and want to have some fun in their lives. A computer is just as capable of processing fun data as it is practical data. Holiday-related and entertainment software bring some of the fun out in computers. From Santa ho-ho-hoing to virtual trick-or-treating, your computer can give you something to smile about between the average routines of life. |
