Screen Shot Gallery -- Windows® NT/2000 Shareware

Windows NT, created in the early 1990's, existed before the "Internet Age" and shareware software for this operating system was distributed in may ways over the years. From racks of floppy disks in software stores to archive downloads on bulletin board services (BBSs) to Internet website downloads from the mid-1990's and later.
The shareware "try before you buy" concept offers users free trials of software. Most commercial software companies will not let you return products once their shrinkwrapped packages have been opened.
After finding the shareware program that best meets your needs, to both obtain the full-featured program free of "nag" screens and to support the authors who offer these low-cost software alternatives, it is only right to "register" the program by paying the author's registration fee. Shareware programs can cost tens or even hundreds of times less than comparable commercial software.

Diagramming
    Look! On your computer screen -- it's a CAD, it's a DTP, no, it's a diagramming program!
With the drawing and layering tools of CAD programs, plus the scale ruler interface look of a desktop publishing program, diagramming software was designed for making flowcharts, heiarchial charts, network diagrams, etc.
Diagramming software combines the power of CAD and DTP software yet simplifies the process to make creating charts and diagrams almost as easy as using a word processor. With a diagramming program you can be productive without having to spend a lot of time and money learning complex CAD concepts that, in many diagramming and charting cases, would never be used.
So the next time you need a flowchart to write that computer program or a diagram of your company's network to trace a wiring connection, don't turn to your engineering drafter to make it on their CAD program. Do it yourself with a diagramming program.

Productivity
In the 1990's, commercial productivity software was expensive -- sometimes costing US$500.00 or more. Shareware productivity software offered a much less expensive alternative.

Screen Saver
Screen savers were originally designed to prevent screen "burn-in" -- the result of the same or similar displays "burning" their image into the inner phosphorous lining of a CRT monitor. A CRT monitor can be ruined in 72 hours with an idle screen displayed continually. This is why you will find used CRT monitors with patterns of spreadsheets and other programs "burned" into their picture tubes.
This can also happen to "new" monitors.
While the best screen saver is one that "blanks" the screen, it is not as entertaining as one that displays something while at the same time "saving" the screen from damage. It also does not earn as much money. Hence, a market was created filled with screen savers flashing displays and some also adding sound to make them a multimedia experience.
But if a screen saver has to hold your attention is it still a screen saver, or has it become an entertainment program?
In the early to mid-1990's, the graphical environment of Windows brought a boom of commercial screen saver programs. They were often relatively expensive with some costing upwards of US$80.00. Shareware Windows screen saver programs offered a less expensive alternative.

A very rare find these days, this is a collection of seven screen savers for Windows NT 3.1. From a clock display moving horizontally across the screen each second (and updating the time) to a display of multi-colored "dancing lines" to Spirograph-like "hypercycloids" to cellular "life" sliming on the screen to colored line "snakes" slithering to and fro to croquet-style, multi-sized, colored "balls" popping onto the screen to a scene of your current screen "zooming" in and out, these screen savers are sure to brighten up your NT sessions.

Utility -- Disk
Windows NT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0 did not come with a disk defragmentation utility. This left the task to third-party software vendors. Very few defragmentation utilities were created for early versions of Windows NT.

Another rare find, this is one of the earliest shareware versions of Diskeeper. It is based on Diskeeper 2.0 Workstation and runs on Windows NT 4.0.

Features options for evaluating the amount of file fragmentation, and the ability to defragment both NTFS and FAT partitions. Its unique disk "map" shows the defragmentation process unfold as a series of thin lines converging together.

Microsoft licensed versions of Diskeeper and incorporated it into the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating system families as their System Tools Disk Defragmenter.

Utility -- File Manager
From the mid-1980's to the early 1990's, it seemed every programmer and their gerbil were writing DOS-based file manager programs. Some of the most famous DOS file managers were Norton Commander, PathMinder, Q-DOS, XTree, and the file managers in PC Tools and Norton Desktop -- the only DOS file managers to offer true drag-and-drop ease of use.
In the early to mid-1990's, the only commercial Windows 3.x file manager was XTreeGold 4.0 for Windows by Central Point Software.
In 1995, Symantec, after "merging" with Central Point Software (and eliminating CPS's product line), was the first commercial software company to offer a 32-bit Windows file manager -- Norton Navigator 95 which is a 32-bit reincarnation of the former Central Point Software XTreeGold 4.0 for Windows 3.1x. Unfortunately, it is optimized for 32-bit, DOS-based Windows 95 and does not run on Windows NT/2000 Professional. The only other commercial 32-bit file manager created for Windows 9x/Me/2000 was a product called PowerDesk by Ontrack Data International, later sold to V Communications.
From 1996 on, PowerDesk was one of the last commercial file managers available for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000. A scaled-down freeware version was offered to entice you to buy the full commercial version.

Utility -- Screen Capture
Screen capture programs are helpful for documentation purposes -- illustrating procedures for running programs, capturing error messages in dialog boxes, etc. They are also good for showing what a program or operating system looks like.
Many operating systems have their own screen capture utility -- Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000, Macintosh, BeOS, and others. If you only need a quick snapshot of a screen's content, chances are you don't need to use a screen capture utility. But if you need to do specialized screen captures -- showing the cursor, capturing a portion of a screen, or other special need, a screen capture utility works well for these and other tasks.

A screen capture utility for Windows NT 3.1. This program lets you make screen shots of any portion of a screen in Windows. The highlighted area is put in the view area in GrabIt's window. You can then save the captured area as a BMP file and/or print the captured area. It also allows copy and paste ability from the clipboard. What is nice about GrabIt is it is very compact and the author does not "force" you to register by imprinting text over the captured images or crippling any of the program's functions.
